Week 5 Vocabulary
Sixth Grade
1. brusque- (adj) marked by rude or peremptory shortness
A brusque manner of speaking is unfriendly, rude, and very brief.
2. commotion- (noun) a disorderly outburst or tumult
If you're trying to quietly concentrate on reading this, you wouldn't want the person next to you to cause a commotion, or it would distract you.
3. condescending- (adj) characteristic of those who treat others with arrogance
A person who's being condescending is arrogant and treats others with a superior attitude.
4. deftly- (adverb) in an agile manner
When something's done deftly, it's accomplished with style and skill.
5. encased- (adj) covered or protected with or as if with a case
A model replica of the freighter is encased in glass.
6. falter- (verb) move hesitatingly, as if about to give way
If you want to keep your bride or groom happy, it's best not to falter when it's your turn to say "I do."
7. hobble- (verb) walk impeded by some physical limitation or injury
When you hobble, you walk awkwardly or unsteadily because you're in pain.
8. imitate- (verb) reproduce someone's behavior or looks
When you imitate someone, you copy them.
9. misshapen- (adj) so badly formed or distorted as to be ugly
You might find an old misshapen Barbie, with messy hair and missing limbs, at the bottom of a toy chest.
10. poised- (adj) marked by balance or equilibrium and readiness for action
If you're poised, you're self-possessed and in full control of your faculties.
11. protruding- (adj) extending out above or beyond a surface or boundary
A bird's beak is protruding from the rest of its face.
12. recurring- (adj) coming back
When you have a recurring cough, it could be something serious, like bronchitis.
13. rummage- (verb) search haphazardly
I need to rummage through my drawers and find that sock.
14. stricken- (adj) grievously affected especially by disease
After finishing the film, he was stricken with polio and spent a year in bed.
15. tantalize- (verb) harass with persistent teasing or baiting
The smell of the grill tantalized us from outside as we waited for the man to finish his speech.
16. taut- (adj) pulled or drawn tight
The tightrope ought to be taut, and not dangling down by the lion cage.
17. trudge- (verb) walk heavily and firmly, as when weary, or through mud
We used to have to trudge up the hill 3 miles in the snow!
18. wry- (adj) humorously sarcastic or mocking
A wry sense of humor is a sarcastic one.
